Concrete is the one material where a regular dumpster is the wrong tool. A single pickup load of busted patio weighs around a ton, which means a modest tear-out blows past a normal dumpster's included tonnage before you've made a dent in the pile. Load a big roll-off with concrete and you don't have a disposal problem, you have a truck that legally can't leave your driveway. It's also why the pickup truck test we use for everything else gets thrown out here: counting loads sizes volume, and concrete's problem was never volume.
A dumpster built for the weight
That's why we run a dedicated concrete dumpster. It's small and low on purpose, about 12 feet long with walls at knee height, sized so that even brim-full of broken slab it stays within what the truck can haul. It runs up to three days at one flat quoted rate, and the weight is unlimited. Fill it to the line with concrete and the number Logan quoted you on the phone doesn't move.
The unlimited part works because of where the load goes. Clean masonry doesn't get buried at the landfill with everything else; it goes to a recycler, gets crushed, and comes back as road base and fill. No landfill scale, no tonnage fee, so we don't have to meter your weight. But that only holds if the load stays clean: concrete, brick, and block, nothing else. Toss in fence posts, rebar-free is fine but lumber isn't, or bags of trash, and the recycler won't take it, which puts the entire load back on the scale. Keep it clean and the flat price holds.
The clean-load rule sounds strict until you see what it's protecting. Every other price in the dumpster world is a bet about weight; this is the one rental where weight simply doesn't matter, and the only way that deal survives is if the load can go straight to the crusher. Treat the dumpster as concrete-brick-block only, stage a separate pile for everything else the demo produces, and you keep the best per-pound price we offer. Loading it without wrecking your back
The low walls turn out to be the best feature on the day you use it. Concrete gets loaded one heavy piece at a time, usually off a wheelbarrow, and there's a genuine difference between rolling up to a knee-height wall and heaving chunks over your head into a tall dumpster. Break the slab into pieces you can lift, stack them flat instead of tossing them in a jumble, and the dumpster holds more than you'd guess.
A few habits make the day go easier. Break as you go rather than smashing the entire slab first, so you're always carrying fresh, manageable pieces instead of re-sorting a rubble field. Plan the wheelbarrow route before the dumpster arrives, and have us set the dumpster as close to the work as the driveway allows; every foot you don't push a loaded barrow matters by the fortieth trip. Sizing a patio, walkway, or driveway tear-out
For sizing: the dumpster holds 7 to 8 cubic yards, and a typical driveway slab runs about a cubic yard of debris per 80 square feet of 4-inch concrete. A 12-by-20 patio makes roughly 3 yards broken up. The math scales down nicely for the small jobs too: a 4-foot-wide front walkway gives up about a yard for every 20 feet of run, so ripping out even a long walk barely dents the dumpster. A two-car driveway can fill the dumpster entirely, and that's fine; a second haul is just another rental, and plenty of driveway jobs run two.
Block and brick follow the same volume logic with one pleasant surprise: they stack. A block wall that looked substantial standing up packs into a corner of the dumpster once it's laid in tight like it was built, and brick tears out even tighter. It's the jumbled loads that eat capacity, in concrete the same as everything else.
One thing the concrete dumpster doesn't take is dirt. If your project mixes excavation with demolition, call before delivery day and we'll figure out the right setup. People sometimes ask what else counts as clean masonry, and the straight answer is: if a mason laid it, it probably rides. Broken steps, mailbox footings, curbing chunks, cinder block from a knocked-down wall, brick from an old chimney, all of it goes in the same dumpster under the same flat price. The three-day window suits how these jobs actually run, too. Most patio and walkway demos happen over a weekend, the dumpster arrives Friday, and by the time you're icing your hands on Sunday night the load's ready for Monday pickup.
