How Much Concrete Actually Fits in the Dumpster

Concrete runs about 50 pounds per square foot at four inches thick, which is how most patios, sidewalks, and residential driveways around here were poured. That puts a 10 by 12 patio near three tons before you've touched it with a hammer, and a two-car driveway apron well past that. Knowing the square footage and the thickness is what lets us tell you on the phone whether your tear-out is one dumpster or two.

Broken slab doesn't stack the way it sat in the ground. Chunks bridge and leave air underneath, so the dumpster looks full sooner than the square-foot math suggests. A couple hundred square feet of four-inch slab is a comfortable load for this one. Much past that, plan on a second dumpster, and we'd rather stage it that way from the start than have you standing in the yard beside a pile with nowhere to put it.

Block and brick add up differently. A standard 8-inch block runs around 35 pounds, so a hundred of them is more than a ton and a half before the mortar stuck to them counts for anything. Brick weighs less per piece but packs denser in the dumpster. Either way, the unlimited weight allowance means you're not doing this arithmetic to dodge an overage charge, you're doing it to know how many dumpsters the job takes.
