Fall Cleanouts Before the Holidays Hit

September 14, 2026 · Cleanouts

If you're hosting family this holiday season, the cleanout should happen in September or October, and mid-September is when the easy version of it starts. Not because the work takes months. A guest room full of boxes clears in a weekend. The reason to start now is everything around the work: the weather has finally broken, donation drop-offs still have room, and your own calendar hasn't filled up with school concerts and travel plans yet.

We rent roll-off dumpsters out of Willow Spring, and every fall the cleanout calls come in two waves. The September callers sound relaxed. They pick a weekend, load at their own pace, and have the guest room repainted by Halloween. The November callers sound like the relatives are already somewhere on I-40 heading this way. Same project either way. One version just costs a lot less stress, and usually less money, because nothing gets thrown out in a panic that should have been sold or donated.

Why September Beats November for a Cleanout

Cooler weather is the obvious part. Hauling boxes down from an attic in a Raleigh July is miserable, and the same job on a cool October morning is close to pleasant. The quieter reason is donations. A good cleanout sorts as it goes, with a donate pile growing next to the toss pile, and in September you can still run a carload to a donation drop-off without waiting in a line of minivans. Wait until the week before Christmas and the hours get shorter and the bins get fuller, and the donate pile has a way of sliding into the dumpster just to be done with it. That's usable furniture headed to a landfill for no good reason.

There's a scheduling angle too. Deliveries and pickups run on weekdays, and we aim to have a dumpster in your driveway within 24 hours of your call. In September, that's usually how it goes. By late November we're threading cleanout deliveries between roofing crews racing to close out jobs before winter, and the straight answer on the phone is sometimes tomorrow rather than today. Logan will tell you that straight either way, but it's easier on everybody to call before the crunch.

What the Guest Room and Garage Actually Generate

Most fall cleanouts are focused jobs, one or two rooms rather than a full house. The guest room that turned into a storage room. The garage that needs to hold a car again before the first frost. The attic nobody has opened since the last move. These jobs produce less volume than people expect, and most of it is light: boxes, old clothes, a dresser, a broken office chair, maybe the mattress from the bed nobody actually sleeps in.

A word on that mattress. Mattresses and box springs carry a small per-mattress fee on top of the rental, because the county transfer stations charge for bedding and each county around here handles it differently, so we flatten it into one fee, quote it with your total when you mention the count, and pass it straight through. Everything else a typical cleanout produces, the furniture and boxes and bags of household stuff, rides in the dumpster at no extra charge and almost never gets close to the included weight.

If the pile includes paint dumpsters, chemicals, tires, appliances, or electronics, those stay out of the dumpster entirely. The full list is on the acceptable items page, and if one corner of the garage turns out to be a stack of dead appliances, say so when you book. There's an appliance-only dumpster for exactly that situation.

Which Size Fits a Fall Cleanout

For a one-room or two-room job, the 10-yard is usually right: up to seven days, about three to four pickup truck loads of capacity, and a footprint about the size of one parking space. If the garage and the attic are both on the list, or there's actual furniture involved, the 15-yard gives you about six loads of room with walls low enough that loading stays easy. Either way the number you hear on the phone is one total that already includes delivery, pickup, and the dump fee anywhere we serve, so nothing gets added at the invoice. If you're stuck between sizes, the pickup truck test is the fastest way to estimate, and if the cleanout is happening ahead of a move rather than a visit, the moving cleanout post walks through that version of the timeline.

The dumpster sits in your driveway for up to a week, so nobody has to pull a marathon Saturday. Load a little each evening if that's how your week works. If the project stretches past seven days, extra days run at a flat per-day rate quoted up front, which is a lot cheaper than rushing a decision about your grandmother's china cabinet.

Call or text (919) 524-4456 with your town and what you're clearing, and Logan will tell you which size fits and when it can be there. She answers between 6am and 9pm, and we deliver across Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Clayton, Holly Springs, and everywhere else everywhere else we serve. Come Thanksgiving, the guest room goes back to being a guest room, and the only thing left to haul is the turkey.
